Vinyl of the Day: C.J. & Co., Devil’s Gun!

It’s Wednesday, let’s dance! Disco with a little funk and a lot of soul is the C.J. & Co.’s album Devil’s Gun. Devil’s Gun (WB 301, 1977) is a polished first release by C.J. & Co. delivering energy with an upbeat tempo without the mainstream hard-driving disco beat. C.J. & Company provides beautiful vocals and harmonies well composed with quality studio musicianship resulting in a high energy and easy to listen to album. The album was at one time the #1 dance album in the US, and the title song “Devil’s Gun” an R&B chart hit at #2. According to Wikipedia “Devil’s Gun” was the first selection played at the opening of the famous disco Studio 54 in NY.

C.J. & Company consisted of the following personnel:

- Cornelius Brown, Jr. (aka C.J.)
- Joni Tolbert
- Connie Durden
- Curtis Durden
- Charles Clark

Unfortunately, C.J. & Co. had a short-lived career disbanding after 3 years in 1979.

Interestingly, the German release of the album has Barbarella (Jane Fonda) on the cover rather than an animated Devil. Is there an implied message here about Jane?

You don’t have to be a disco fan to like this album. So, give Devil’s Gun a listen and if you do like what you hear this album will be available at the Love the Music Record Show this Sunday, 4/23.

Happy Listening!
