Vinyl of the Day: David Bowie, Aladdin Sane!

It is the 50th anniversary of the release of this landmark David Bowie album Aladdin Sane. If you are familiar with this album, then no overview is necessary.

I got my first version in college (LSP-4852, 1973) and became entranced by the imagery of the lyrics dissecting them in pace with Bowie’s delivery. Although a concept album like many David Bowie albums the song collection seems eclectic with the quasi-psychotic Avant Garde piano solo by Mike Garson on the song “Aladdin Sane”, the Mick Ronson hard-driving guitar work on “Panic in Detroit”, “Cracked Actor”, and “The Jean Genie”, then closing with the seductive “Lady Grinning Soul”. Aladdin Sane ends, the tonearm lifts, it’s now quiet and you are emotionally depleted though your mind is still processing the experience.

I recently purchased the Aladdin Sane 50th Anniversary Half-Speed Master release (Parlophone DBAS 50) and listened to it for the first time this morning. Bravo! Bravo David Bowie!

An early-70’s release of this album will be available for purchase at the Love the Music Record Show this Sunday, 4/23.

Happy Listening!
