Vinyl of the Day: Spirit, Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus

An oldie, but “boldie”. Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus (Epic 30276, 1970) is arguably Spirit’s most creative work with roots in 60’s progressive blues-rock bridged into 70’s experimental rock. The eponymous Spirit and The Family That Plays Together are also Spirit prog-rock releases. At release Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus did not chart well but has since been recognized as a landmark album in the genre of art rock. Each song (“dream”) stands on its own with the most notables being “Nothing to Hide”, “Nature’s Way”, and “Mr. Skin”.

Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus is the last album Spirit released with its original members: Mark Andes (Bass), Randy California (Lead Guitar, Vocals), Ed Cassidy (Drums), Jay Ferguson (Vocals, Guitar), and John Locke (Keyboards). A remastered 180g audiophile edition of this album was released by Move On Vinyl in 2019 with a limited pressing of 1,000 copies. These currently sell for $30 to $100 (Mint). If you can find an earlier NM/NM release for around $20 it is well worth the musical investments.

Happy Listening!
